Call it the Italian answer to Poutine, my pizza fries are an easy gameday appetizer made with 3 ingredients. Waffle fries, pizza sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Grab a fork because these fries are cheesy, saucy, and incredibly addicting.
Pizza fries have been on my list for a while, I was just waiting for football season to roll around before diving in…and that we did. Patty and I both agree this recipe is an absolute winner. The fries around the edges will be crispier while the fries in the middle will be a little denser and soft (my fav part).
Definitely a fork-approved recipe with amazing texture and rich flavor that will remind you of chicken parmesan.
Baking the Fries
There isn’t much of a science to this recipe. I basically used a frozen bag of waffle fries and baked them in a cast-iron skillet until they were crispy. Baking fries in a skillet is going to add some time to cooking because they will obviously overlap and stack in the skillet. You can make these on a baking sheet instead but I like the overall ease and presentation of making them in a cast-iron skillet. I mean it’s me after all.
I used a little over a pound of waffles fries and baked for about 35-40 minutes before it reached the level of crispiness I was looking for. I would recommend you look at the suggested time on your packaged fries and go from there. I added about 10-15 minutes. You want the fries to be plenty crispy because the sauce is going to add a lot of moisture.
You can opt for regular cut fries as well, the waffle fries just do an amazing job of holding onto the toppings better.

Toppings for Pizza Fries
My pizza fries are topped with pizza sauce but you can also use marinara if that’s all you have. I did not go crazy with the sauce as to not saturate the fries and create a soggy mess. small spread dollops work best. I used about 1/2 a cup or so but you can add more or less to taste.
Add shredded mozzarella cheese last and bake for another 6-8 minutes in the oven. An 8-ounce bag of cheese is more than enough. I used about 3/4 of the bag. My recommendation is to broil the fries for the last 1-2 minutes to give the cheese a nice golden sear. I topped mine with fresh chopped basil but that’s totally optional. I also recommend crushed red pepper flakes on the side.
I’ve seen other recipes incorporate pepperoni as well! Enjoy!

Description
Pizza fries are an easy gameday appetizer made with 3 ingredients. Waffle fries, pizza sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Grab a fork because these fries are cheesy, saucy, and incredibly addicting.
Ingredients
- 1 pound bag frozen waffles fries
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce (marinara sauce is fine)
- 8-ounce bag of shredded mozzarella cheese (used about 1–1/2 cups)
- Chopped basil, optional
- crushed red pepper flakes, optional
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450℉.
- Bake fries first without toppings. If using a 12-inch cast-iron skillet, a pound of waffle fries will take about 35-40 minutes to bake (because of overlap). Toss halfway through to cook evenly. If using a baking sheet, follow cooking instructions on the bag. Do not underbake as cheese/sauce that will add moisture. Shoot for a nice crisp fry.
- Season fries with salt and pepper and top with a layer of pizza sauce and then mozzarella cheese. Bake for 6-8 minutes or until cheese is melted. I like to broil for the last 1-2 minutes to give the cheese a golden finish.
- Remove from the oven, top with chopped basil, and serve with a fork.
Notes
You can opt for regular cut fries as well, the waffle fries just do an amazing job of holding onto the toppings better.
